Sustainability

Sustainability is the guiding principle to Egis’ core values. In line with our CSR Policy, we work hard to minimize our environmental impact, use resources efficiently and leave a positive legacy for both our clients and the communities in which we work. We are committed to ensuring that we work with suppliers, partners and clients who also recognize their responsibility to the people they employ, the communities they affect, and their local and global environment.

Innovation is central to Egis’ service offering in terms of differentiation. Egis constantly encourages creative approaches, cross-pollination of best practices throughout the Group and with its local partners in South Africa.

Egis is at the forefront of Smart Mobility and the development of Smart Cities globally and in South Africa. Intelligent Transport Solutions (ITS) aim to take full advantage of the dynamic use of the latest technologies to optimize the functionality of existing transport infrastructure – typically, to address issues such as safety, speed monitoring and enforcement, overload control and traffic decongestion in urban areas.

Leveraging off its financial strength, its global expertise and its local footprint, Egis seeks to imagine local solutions relevant to the South African environment for the long run. Both our business model and our corporate responsibility ethos drive our distinct ability to take the "long view" on both markets and people - and in creating both sustainable and balanced partnerships.

Egis Operation South Africa recognizes that socio-economic transformation as an imperative and values the benefits of operating a diverse workforce, particularly in terms of gender and race. Our aim is to always create an inclusive workplace culture that supports the development and progression of all individuals.

In South Africa, the development of our local supply-chain and partnering strategies to stimulate and empower a vibrant ecosystem of SMMEs is core to our growth strategy.

Egis Operation South Africa is committed to offering education and training opportunities, particularly to those from previously disadvantaged groups - and to developing internal skills programs that ensure local skills transfer and exposure to our global best practices. We also seek to support communities through structured local socio-economic initiatives.

Critically, Egis Operation South Africa is committed to contributing to the development of the next generation of both technical and engineering professionals through bursaries and learnership schemes - and opportunities to gain on-site experience coupled with mentorship.

The COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with the recent wave of lootings, has caused significant disruptions to the South African economy, leaving many communities in need. In line with the core values of the Egis Group, Egis Operation South Africa has quickly risen to lend a helping hand. In August 2021 Leratong Joy for One Foundation, an orphanage based in Alexandra, became a beneficiary of the company’s involvement in community development. Gift packs containing toys, toiletries, sweet treats, as well as a brand-new washing machine, were donated to the foundation to meet the daily needs of the 20 children who call Leratong Joy home.

Egis is a group built on the values of ethics, transparency, quality, respect, and integrity. These values are the basis of our reputation and of our brand equity as a global organization.

The Group has defined a stringent set of rules – with a “zero tolerance” policy towards corruption.

Egis Operation South Africa views ethics as a core pillar of sustainability – and a value better served by actual deeds than words.

We believe that an ethical approach to business must include fair payment practices of both suppliers and service providers – especially, SMMEs.

With this in mind, Egis Operation South Africa has adopted since 2021 a “Net 7 days” from invoice date payment policy of invoices of both EME and QSE companies.

Health

Egis is committed to ensuring healthy workplaces, helping our employees and those that work with us to be physically and mentally fit so they can perform at their best and live full lives.

Health and Safety permeates all that we do. We consider health and safety when selecting projects and when choosing supply chain partners.

Every day, nothing is more important than ensuring that every single one of our employees goes back home from work safe – hence, our emphasis on continuously training our staff, comprehensively planning our projects, and operating according to industry-leading health and safety standards.

Egis Operation South Africa is a contributor to the Solidarity Fund as a show of support to Government’s efforts in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic.

Egis has a strong culture of safety on all project sites it manages. In 2014, Egis decided to structure and roll out this approach under the theme: “Safety Attitude by Egis”.

Egis actively supports safety awareness workshops for schoolchildren and pedestrians in communities. Recently, one such workshop attended by over 500 learners was launched in a primary school in Ekurhuleni in Gauteng, in partnership with EMPD and a local emerging safety company under Egis’ enterprise development programme.

At Egis, protecting the environment is a central pillar of our corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy. We are united in our determination to address this pressing challenge in all our projects and operations. Egis joined the United Nations Global Compact in 2011. The Egis Sustainable Development/Corporate Social Responsibility Charter reaffirms the Group’s public commitment to reducing the direct environmental impacts of our business.

To reinforce its commitment to both Egis CSR values and sustainable development, Egis Operation South Africa has joined WWF South Africa's Business Network as a Gold Business Network Partner from 1 February 2021. see https://www.wwf.org.za/business_network_partners
